Activity: Exploring Cyprus Traditional Eco Houses
The house of father Kallinikos Stavrovouniotis
The traditional house belonged to the family of Petros and Florence Mammos, where they lived here with their five children
during the 20th century. One of their children was Kostas, the later monk and hagiographer Kallinikos Stavrovouniotis. There
was a grocery store and a cheese factory in the area of the house, as Petros Mammous was a merchant and cheese maker.
In 2008 the house was rented by the Kallinikos Monastery
Foundation in order to restore it and turn it into a museum. At the
top of the house were formed the spaces presenting it as it was
the traditional houses of the 20th century. Part of the house was
formed as a hagiography workshop, presenting the remarkable
work of the monk Kallinikos Stavrovouniotis, while in the area
where the Mammou family kept a grocery store, today it has been
transformed into an art workshop. The traditional cheese factory
has been completely restored, in order to represent the traditional
way of making Athienou halloumi and anari.
At the same time, exhibitions, lectures, seminars and various
cultural activities are held in the area, with the aim of preserving
the memory of the great benefactor of Athienou, monk Kallinikos
Stavrovouniotis, who had faithfully served hagiography and
Byzantine art. 39
