The 2 nd European Transnational Learning and Teaching activity
Program was organized by the IES Teguise de Teguise School on
the Spanish island of Lanzarote and took place on 21-26 February
2020. The purpose of the meeting was to educate and train
teachers, specifically about the cultivation of vineyards and wine
production on the island of Lanzarote.
The meeting was attended by teachers from 6 educational
institutions that collaborate in the aforementioned project. Our
school was represented at the meeting by teachers Antonis
Antoniou (coordinator), Fani Sotiriou (member of the Erasmus
Group) and Orthodoxia Tornari (member of the Erasmus team).
In this project we studied about the cultivation of vines and grapes
in the islands of Lanzarote, Cyprus and Crete which have not been
affected by phylloxera.
Phylloxera is a parasite that arrived in France in the 19 th century
from the Americas, spread throughout Europe and virtually
destroyed all vineyards. However, these islands were not affected
by the deciduous grove and, at present, pre-deciduous vineyards
are still cultivated on the islands. On the other hand, the
cultivation of vines on the island of Lanzarote is particularly
important mainly due to the fact that it grows on an island with
volcanic soil that has very special weather conditions with low
rainfall.
The teachers had the opportunity to visit vineyards and wineries
and also to take part in activities in order to get to know the
historical and cultural heritage of the island. 197
